Client overview

A state-owned petroleum and natural gas organization serves as the national oil company of Saudi Arabia. As of 2022, it is the second-largest company in the world by revenue and is headquartered in Dhahran. The organization also captures emissions and converts them into useful industrial products and manufacturing feedstocks that support economic growth and job creation. These efforts, along with other sustainability strategies, have helped it achieve one of the lowest CO₂ footprints in the oil and gas industry.

Solution offered

The Smart ID Solutions project modernized traditional ID card management and access control by replacing manual, office-based processes with automated digital workflows. Previously, users had to visit the Industrial Security Operations office for ID issuance and renewals; the new system introduced mobile applications and automated processes that significantly reduced wait times and operational overhead. Two key applications—a Photo Update App and a Digital ID App—enabled users to manage IDs remotely and verify identity through smartphones. Built using Swift for iOS and Java for Android, these apps offered seamless, secure user experiences with real-time data synchronization supported by web services and integrated databases. NFC and Bluetooth technologies enabled secure, contactless access control, while Innovatrics APIs ensured strict photo and security compliance.

The project addressed critical challenges, including the lack of remote ID management, reliance on physical smart cards, and inefficient manual renewals. By digitizing workflows, enhancing verification, and enabling mobile access, the solution delivered a scalable, secure, and efficient ID management platform suited for a modern, mobile workforce.

Business challenges

  • Users were bogged down by the need to physically visit the Industrial Security Operation (ISO) office for ID issuance or renewal, a process mired in manual inefficiencies and long wait times.

  • The system's dependence on physical smart cards for identity verification and access control highlighted a glaring gap in digital adaptation, missing out on the potential efficiencies of mobile application integration.

  • The existing ID management framework was laden with inefficiencies, placing an undue burden on ISO staff and causing unnecessary delays for users.

  • Without the option for remote ID updates or the use of digital IDs for access control, the system was starkly behind the times, lacking the flexibility and mobility that modern technology affords.

Business outcomes

  • Transitioning to an online platform allowed users to manage IDs remotely, streamlining operations and improving efficiency by eliminating manual processes.

  • By replacing physical smart cards with digital IDs, the solution enhanced security through advanced authentication methods and increased user convenience by simplifying access and verification processes.

  • Digitalizing the ID management system facilitated better data organization and faster processing, enhancing user experience through improved accuracy and accessibility.

  • The digital ID system offered users the ability to update and manage their IDs from anywhere, accommodating the needs of remote and field-based employees.

The impact

  • 50% faster approval workflows with mobile-based approval processes.

  • Zero security breaches post-implementation of the digital ID solution.

  • 30% reduction in supplier qualification and ID renewal processing time.
