What happens when critical systems fail unexpectedly? Whether it’s due to a cloud infrastructure failure, a network outage, or data corruption, the consequences can be severe impacting your business operations, customer trust, and overall productivity. These challenges are not hypothetical; they are real risks that every organization must prepare for.

This is where business continuity solutions are essential. With strategies like automated backups, disaster recovery frameworks, and failover mechanisms, businesses can build resilience, protect critical systems, and ensure minimal downtime during disruptions. The following sections explore these factors and solutions in detail, highlighting how to mitigate risks and maintain uninterrupted operations.

What are Business Continuity Solutions?

Business continuity solutions are a set of processes, technologies, and strategies designed to ensure that an organization can recover and maintain its critical operations during and after a disruption. These solutions go beyond disaster recovery by proactively addressing potential risks, ensuring uninterrupted services, and minimizing downtime.

Key components of business continuity solutions include:

  • Risk Assessment: Identifying vulnerabilities and understanding the potential impact of disruptions on critical systems.
  • Backup and Recovery: Ensuring data is regularly backed up and can be restored quickly.
  • Disaster Recovery Plans: Establishing clear procedures for restoring operations, including defining Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs).
  • Redundancy: Setting up secondary systems or regions to maintain availability during failures.
  • Testing and Training: Regularly testing continuity plans and training teams to handle emergencies effectively.

By integrating these elements, organizations can protect their operations, maintain data integrity, and build resilience against unexpected events.

Challenges Impacting Business Continuity

Challenges Impacting Business Continuity

Let’s take an example of an organization who keeps their workloads on a public cloud landscape with multiple SAP Applications and Database servers. The business continuity of the organization may have the following disruption modes:

  • Cloud Infrastructure Failures: Entire SAP workloads might become unavailable if it relies on a single cloud region or availability zone.
  • Network connectivity issues:  More organizations will depend on third party Service Providers for Internet. When there are problems with these ISPs, it may cause connectivity issues between public cloud and customers.
  • Resource Scaling and Management: SAP systems may experience performance issues or downtime due to insufficient compute or memory resources during high-demand periods.
  • Data Corruption: System crashes from failed OS patches or updates lead to critical SAP application and database downtime.
  • Data Integrity Issues: Accidental deletion or unintended modifications of database data cause operational delays, loss of critical information, and hinder decision-making processes.

Solutions for Overcoming Business Continuity Challenges

To address these challenges, we implemented a multi-layered approach leveraging cloud-native technologies, automated monitoring, and resilience practices to ensure continuous operation and data integrity.  Here we discuss the solution provided to one of our customers who was in a public cloud environment.

Automated OS and DB Backups:

We implemented AWS Backup Service which in turn uses Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) and Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) snapshots to regularly back up operating systems and databases. This ensures the ability to recover from system crashes, patch failures, or data corruption, maintaining business continuity.

We implemented AWS BackInt Agent for SAP HANA, which integrates with AWS Backup to perform regular and automated backups of HANA databases. The solution ensures reliable recovery from data corruption, system failures, or accidental data loss, maintaining business continuity.

Key features and Benefits:

  • Centralized Backup Management: Simplifies backup operations by managing multiple resources through a single interface.
  • SAP HANA Integration: Provides native support for SAP HANA backups, ensuring compatibility and streamlined operations.
  • Policy-Driven Automation: Reduces manual effort by automating backup schedules and retention policies.
  • Cross-Region Backup Support: Enhances disaster recovery by safeguarding backups in geographically distant regions.
  • Incremental Backup Capability: Minimizes storage costs by storing only data changes since the last backup.

Setup Secondary Region for Disaster Recovery:

We implemented an optimized infrastructure in secondary region that can serve the users. This is helpful when the entire primary region goes down due to various factors like natural disasters, hardware failures, system failures or network connectivity issues due to ISP.

Active-Active Replication from Primary to Secondary:

Databases in the primary region are synced automatically with secondary region. SAP application is maintained both in Primary and Secondary Regions. When the primary region undergoes failure, the network connectivity is redirected to the secondary region. This avoids downtime to end users.

Tools like Oracle GuardDuty help in replicating Oracle DB from primary to secondary so that we minimize the data loss due to outage and maintaining overall RPO.

Key features and Benefits:

  • Automatic Data Synchronization: Since DB servers in secondary region are almost UpToDate with primary region. Data loss due to primary region failure is minimized and overall RTO is maintained.
  • High Availability: Replicated Architecture in secondary region ensures services are available even during maintenance activities.

Failover phase:

This refers to all the steps taken to make the end users to use services from secondary region as the primary region is currently down.

Steps taken for Failover:

  • SAP application is made to run in the secondary region either by restoring the backup from primary or the SAP application is already in standby mode in secondary region
  • Since the DB is actively replicated to secondary region, we already have the DB running.
  • The stability of SAP application and DB servers in secondary region is verified.
  •  Users are made to connect to SAP Application in secondary region and resume everyday activities.

Failback phase:

This refers to all the steps taken to make the end users use services again from primary region by resolving issues in primary region. This might include troubleshooting and resolving all issues in primary region and making it available to use.

Steps taken for Failback:

  • The root cause for primary region failure is analysed and necessary steps are taken to make the primary region available again. Sometimes, the region failure might be caused by public cloud provider. In that case, we must contact cloud provider for further steps.
  • If the systems in primary region fail due to misconfigurations in SAP or DB servers, then the servers are patched accordingly and tested for use. If the failure is due to Internet Service Provider (ISP), then they are contacted accordingly, and further steps are taken.
  • When the primary region is ready to use. Appropriate downtime is requested for secondary region. Once it is approved, Backups are taken from secondary region and restored to primary region thereby eliminating data loss.
  • Stability of Primary region is verified, and network connectivity for end users is directed back to primary region.

With techniques like Failover and Failback, smooth business operation is ensured, and the end customers are abstracted away from the complexities of backend infrastructure.

Key Takeaways

The implemented solution stands above all and provides very strong assurance for critical values like data integrity, disaster recovery and continued operations over a public cloud environment. By implementing AWS Backup, Backint Agent for SAP HANA and cross-region replication, we ensured the complete process of backup management automated, policy driven and offering high availability.

Thus, benefits are centralized backup operations, smooth integration with SAP HANA, incremental backup cost-effective, and architecture resistant to disasters. These also reduce downtime and loss of data with varied active-active replication and optimized secondary region infrastructure to improve user experience during outages and maintenance.
